Norfolk

Day 6 (Fri, Nov 18): We were up and moving early but had to wait for mid morning when the waves and wind calmed down. We headed out with some pretty nasty waves still hitting us first abeam, and then following. Made for a pretty tense trip south. My nice pot of oregano and thyme found a watery grave. Simply not feasible to have a large pot of herbs on board. Some very lucky crab is now using my pot as a penthouse.
As we approached Norfolk, we got a call from another Whitby owner. We found out a close friend had cancer. This has been a very sad year. I can only remember one other time when the loss of friends and family has been as tough. The passing of my very dear friend Ellen early this fall, left a hole that simply can’t be filled. It is odd how death impacts you sometimes. It can be soft, memorable and stings. Other times, it hits you like a truck and shakes your whole foundation. Ellen’s passing was the shaking type for me. I miss her and the energy she shared with everyone. I can’t completely explain it but the losses we encountered this year definitely contributed to our decision to change and set out on our adventure. As we approached Norfolk and one step closer to Mile 0 of the ICW, the reality of our journey set in for the first time. This was real and definitely different…
At Norfolk we pulled into Rebel Marina in Willoughby Bay. Patrick bonded with David. Seems the ambiance of the common areas and hot tub reminded him of a lodge in Cost Rica. I will say, the feeling at this marina is very welcoming. And, there is attention to detail. Things are clean, in order and very well maintained. Patrick was up at 2am and in the hot tub for a second time. He had difficulty sleeping after the news about his friend. It has left a knot in my tummy too.
